Effective Interpersonal Communication
TOMBSTONE
One reference states a person can achieve effective interpersonal communications by following 9 principles. 1.) Treat each other with respect. 2.) Do not interrupt one another. 3.) Everyone has the right to pass. 4) Do not volunteer others. 5.) Only speak for ourselves. 6.) Speak but not too often or too long. 7.) Challenge the behavior and not the person. 8.) Respect confidentiality. 9.) It is ok to make mistakes. This reference states with awareness and understanding of these principles we can improve the quality of effective interpersonal communication with just about everyone we come in contact with. Principle number 1, 3 and 6 identify common ways in which we interact with others and with situations where effective interpersonal communication is essential to our daily lives.
Treat each other with respect - this means we can spend our time complaining and running others down when we could be spending our time enjoying ourselves and being with our loved ones, rather than being distracted with difficulties created by others.
We have the right to pass- this means we can decide not to do something even if we feel we should and we don’t want to.
We speak but not too often or too long – this means just filling up the air with conversation does not help us connect with the person we are communicating with.
Movie: Tombstone (1993 starring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer and Sam Elliott)
Scene: In the movie Tombstone we see three of the 9 principles of effective interpersonal communication in the scene Wyatt Earp sees a man unloading his horse from the train in Tucson as the man is taking the horse down the ramp of the train Wyatt witnesses the man striking his horse and he strikes the man the same way the man had struck the horse. Wyatt says to the man “it hurts doesn’t it”. Wyatt is then approached by Marshall Crawley Dake. Marshall Dake hardly gets to introduce himself when Wyatt tells Marshall Dake he doesn’t want the job. Marshall Dake says you don’t understand and Wyatt tells Marshall Dake no you don’t understand I did my time and now it is time to get on with my life. Wyatt tells Marshall Dake I am going to Tombstone. Marshall Dake says to strike it rich, well never met a rich man who didn’t have a guilty conscience. Wyatt says well I already have the guilty conscience I might as well have the money too. Wyatt then sees his brothers Morgan, Virgil and their wives who have just stepped off the train waiting to see Wyatt and his wife. Wyatt says I’ve sure been dreaming about this God since forever. As they are all leaving the train station they pass a store window. They all see their reflection in the window of the store, and Wyatt says don’t talk just look. As Wyatt and the others stare at their reflections of the store window.
Wyatt demonstrated treating each other with respect this even included the treatment of his horse. Wyatt was putting his energy into to spending time with his loved one and putting the difficulties of his life behind him. Wyatt also gave himself the right to pass. He let Marshall Dake know he was taking responsibility for his choices and actions because no one else can. Wyatt also didn’t speak too much he said what he had to say to Marshall Drake and moved on.
The next reference states interpersonal communication process is the seven elements involved in transferring meaning from one person to another. These seven elements are: message, encoding, channel, decoding, noise, nonverbal communication and body language. Some of the most meaningful communications are neither spoken nor written. Three of these processes are message, nonverbal communications, and body language.
Message- is a purpose to be conveyed.
Nonverbal communications- communication transmitted without words.
Body language- gestures, facial configurations, and other body movements that convey meaning.
Movie: Tombstone (1993 Kurt Russell, Val Kilmar and Sam Elliott)
Scene: Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan and Doc Holliday round the corner to the OK Corral where the Cowboys are waiting for the Earp’s. Virgil says “We are here to disarm you throw up your hands.” All of the men stop and place their hands on their guns. Seeing this Virgil says “Hold it this is not what I want.” All of the men stand with their hands on their guns starring each other in the eyes. Doc Holliday smiles and winks at Billy Clanton. Wyatt sees the look in Billy’s eyes and says “Oh My God!” The shooting begins, after many shots are fired, and several men are killed all being the Cowboys.
The Earp’s and Doc Holliday send a message to the Cowboys, with Wyatt wearing a gun. Wyatt had not been armed since coming to Tombstone the message was, we are here to end the Cowboys reign of terror in Tombstone.
Nonverbal communications is evident when all of the men stand with their hands on their guns. This action clearly says make the wrong move or at this point any move and you will be shot with this gun right here under my hand.
Body language is the obvious move of Doc Holliday when he smiles and winks at Billy Clanton. This move was to taunt Billy into making a move, and as expected Billy pulls his gun and the fight is on. This was just the reaction Doc wanted.
